⚛️ Fall Into Learning: October 24th  Winner 🤖

CETLA is proud to continue highlighting GCU’s Fall Into Learning with AI challenge in partnership with Faculty Training & Development, showcasing how instructors across disciplines are using artificial intelligence to inspire deeper learning, creativity, and critical thinking.

This week’s spotlight features Dr. William Davidson, Instructor of General Chemistry, whose innovative AI-Assisted Debate Assignment transforms the traditional classroom into a dynamic space for scientific reasoning and digital exploration.

In this assignment, students take on the role of scientist–debater by selecting a core chemistry topic, such as the relevance of the mole concept, the predictive power of VSEPR theory, or the necessity of catalysts, and engaging in a debate with an AI model like ChatGPT. The AI is programmed to defend an intentionally flawed or controversial stance, challenging students to craft a well-reasoned, evidence-based counterargument grounded in scientific accuracy.

Through this exercise, learners strengthen both their chemistry knowledge and their ability to engage critically with AI. Rather than treating AI as a shortcut, students learn to use it as a collaborative learning partner—one that sharpens their reasoning and communication skills while reinforcing responsible technology use.

💡 Why We Love It:
Dr. Davidson’s assignment embodies the spirit of Fall Into Learning by blending scientific rigor, ethical engagement, and creative inquiry. His approach empowers students to question, defend, and communicate with confidence, skills essential to both future scientists and educators.

🍁 Let’s celebrate Dr. Davidson and all the faculty who continue to find innovative ways to bring curiosity, integrity, and technology together in the classroom!
